“Building a Metal-Bodied Hand Plane” by Stephen M. Thomas

 

This 3 part article featured in the Home Shop Machinist Magazine details the authors experience in building a Norris style smoothing plane from a #51 rough casting from The St. James Bay Tool Co.  Thomas uses photos and line drawings to guide you through all the steps he took on his plane-making odyssey. He also includes his reasons for choosing a Norris style smoothing plane. He says “most are stunningly beautiful in shape, visually enhanced by the interplay of bronze and steel parts with the wood infill.” Thomas also explains some of the plane’s unique history.
